Space Center Houston's Space U programs offer immersive STEM day camps for students aged 11-14, blending hands-on engineering challenges with real-world data collection to provide a practical understanding of space mission planning and execution. Participants delve into project-based activities inspired by current space exploration, exploring behind-the-scenes areas of NASA Johnson Space Center and Rocket Park. Campers build teamwork skills and connect with NASA professionals, gaining insights into careers in space exploration. Select 5-day programs include live interactions with an astronaut. The experience features daily lunch at The Food Lab, culminating in a graduation ceremony and certificate. Activities encompass designing and launching model rockets, creating mission patches, experimenting with thermal and cryogenic protection, designing robotic end effectors, piloting drones, and navigating virtual reality Martian surfaces. Students also investigate Earth and the Moon through hands-on experimentation, building and coding Microbit-based sensors, and examining buoyancy to collect and classify lunar rock samples.

What a typical day looks like

A typical day involves hands-on engineering challenges, project-based activities, and interactive learning sessions from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., including a daily lunch break.
