The Texas Aerospace Scholars (TAS) program offers Texas high school juniors and seniors an authentic STEM learning experience with NASA missions. The Junior Experience is a year-long commitment that begins in the fall with an online course called Launch Pad, where students explore four mission-inspired modules covering Earth science, space exploration, and technology. High-achieving students are then invited to participate in a five-day virtual summer challenge, Moonshot, mentored by NASA scientists and engineers. During Moonshot, students work in teams to plan an Artemis-themed mission to the Moon and Mars. The top teams from Moonshot are invited to Base Camp, a residential experience at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The Senior Experience, a six-month commitment, starts with Ignition, an online course focusing on aerospace manufacturing, engineering, and lunar surface infrastructure. Top-achieving seniors are invited to Flight Path, a five-day virtual summer challenge to design a component for a sustainable lunar presence, with the highest-scoring teams invited to Slingshot, a residential experience at NASA Johnson Space Center to manufacture prototypes and tour facilities.
During the virtual summer experience, students work in teams on design challenges and engineering activities, planning an Artemis-themed mission to the Moon and Mars, with guidance from NASA engineers and scientists.
