About this camp

The Molecular Medicine Summer Immersion Program at the University of Houston is a two-week, full-day experience designed for motivated high school students aged 15-18 with a strong interest in science, medicine, or biomedical research. Participants engage in intensive laboratory activities, interactive lectures, and small-group discussions to understand how modern medicine is built on molecular and cellular biology. Students gain hands-on training in core biomedical techniques such as laboratory biosafety, sterile technique, mammalian cell culture, gene delivery, fluorescence microscopy, bacterial culture, protein purification, and protein analysis by electrophoresis. The program emphasizes teamwork, critical thinking, and scientific communication through guided experiments, data analysis, and a final presentation showcase. Students also participate in career and academic pathway conversations with pre-medical, medical, and and graduate trainees, gaining insight into potential careers in medicine and biomedical science. Upon completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion, formal laboratory biosafety training, and documented exposure to university-level biomedical research techniques, which can be valuable for academic resumes and future program applications. Exceptional performance may also lead to eligibility for a faculty letter of recommendation for college applications.
